Different Types of HVAC Systems

Different types of HVAC Systems

There are four different types of HVAC systems: split system, hybrid heat split system, ductless split system and package systems. These four come in different specifications and sizes to suit your residential or commercial needs.

Split System

A split HVAC system is the most common type of system found in homes. It includes components both inside and outside the home that work together to cool and heat the home throughout the year. Although some homeowners will have added parts like humidifiers or air purifiers a split system will most likely include the following:

  1. An air conditioner that cools the refrigerant
  2. A fan or evaporator coil to convert the refrigerant and circulate the air
  3. A furnace
  4. Air ducts
  5. A thermostat to control system

A split system is an easy system to manage your home’s temperature and stay comfortable.

Hybrid Heat Split System

The hybrid heat split system is very similar to the classic split system, but it has an added bonus of improved energy efficiency. It achieves this by having both a gas furnace and an electric heat pump. This type of system can gauge the temperature of the outside air and determine which fuel system would be most cost effective for the current conditions. Furthermore, a heat pump is able to cool the air as well.

Ductless Split System

A duct-free system also known as a mini-split system does not require ductwork. They are great in room additions or in areas where installing ductwork is not a feasible option. A mini-split system allows you to control the temperature in individual rooms or spaces. They have two main components an indoor evaporator and an outdoor condenser. They are easy to install and only require a small hole to connect the two with power and communication cables, copper tubing, and a condensation drain line. Furthermore, a mini-split system is more efficient than the conventional split system in that it avoids energy loss associated with having a duct system.

Packaged System

When a home or business does not have enough space for a split system, a packaged system is best. Packaged systems combine all the components of a split system air conditioner/heat pump, evaporator, fan coil and thermostat into one unit that sits outside your home.
