Noisy Air Vents

noisy air vents

When it comes to your HVAC system some noise is expected when its running and is normal. Most of the time the noise you hear is coming from the HVAC system itself. One common cause is from your ductwork expanding and contracting especially when switching from heat to cool mode. However, if the noise is so loud it is concerning it would be best to contact an expert at LA Construction, Heating and Air.  In this article we will be reviewing what can cause noisy air vents and ducts.

Closed or Blocked Registers

As we have discussed in previous posts it is best to leave your vents unobstructed and open. Check if any of your registers may be covered by furniture, or even curtains. If you have closed off any vents, it could cause more stress on your HVAC unit, leading it to work harder and make more noise. Make sure they are open to allow air to flow freely and circulate properly through the system. Another thing to consider is your dampers. Closing several dampers could also make your system noisier.

Dirty Air Filters

Dirty or clogged air filters can cause high pitched sounds. Over time the dust and debris buildup on your filters can make your system work harder to move air resulting in a noisier system. Clogged filters should be replaced immediately as you do not want to breathe in dirty air or restrict airflow. We recommend checking your filter often and replacing at minimum once every 3 months.

Damaged Ducts

Your ductwork does not make much noise on its own, the air moving through the ducts is what makes noise, and a variety of things could make it less or more noisier. In general ducts will make more noise if they get loose or separated. If the damage is minimal you may be able to patch or repair just those sections instead of having to replace your entire duct system. Furthermore, if the ducts were not installed properly it could result in sagging or bent flex ducts which would make it harder for your system to move air leading to unnecessary excessive noise.

Narrow Air Ducts

Your air vents can make loud noises if the air ducts are far too narrow for your home. Your duct system should match the size of your home. If you have small narrow air ducts for a large home, they will retract and expand often leading to more sounds. If you have a smaller home, your ducts can be smaller as you will require less air to keep you comfortable. If you suspect your ductwork is improperly sized, give us a call.
