Warning Signs of Poor Air Quality

Warning Signs of Poor Air Quality

We’re all aware of the dangers of allergens, pollution, and poor air quality outside, but what about inside our homes. The last thing you want is for your personal refuge to be unsafe, and just because you’ve tested your air quality once doesn’t mean it can’t change, even from day to day. Here are some warning signs of poor air quality inside your home:

Dust

Dust isn’t just something to clean up when you’re doing your household chores. It can also be a sign that there’s an air quality problem in your home. Dust can come from plants, pollen, pets, and other sources, and can cause a host of irritating health problems, as well as make your home feel unclean and is definitely one of the signs of poor air quality.

Odors

We’ve already mentioned mold odors, but other types of odors can also be indicative of poor air quality. You might not notice the smell until you return home from being away. If something smells amiss (either a chemical or mold odor, or something else entirely), this could be one of the warning signs of poor air quality problem. This also might mean that your home is lacking in ventilation, and poor quality air is unable to flow through and ultimately leave your home.

Changes in Your Environment

This one might be easier to spot than some of the others. Have you recently begun renovating an area of your home? Is there construction going on nearby? This sort of work can create dust, introduce new chemicals, or uncover problematic materials in your home’s construction. If you live in a high density area, your neighbor’s activities could also be affecting your home’s air quality. Even seemingly-small or routine actions like spraying insecticides can have an impact.

Health Concerns

Hopefully, your air quality concerns won’t get this far. If you’re noticing health issues, they might be a result of poor air quality. The types of symptoms you might experience can range from cold or allergy-like symptoms (runny nose, sore throat, sneezing, and coughing) to headaches, nausea, fatigue, and dizziness. It might even be difficult to breathe normally. These issues might be worse for those who already have respiratory conditions. If you feel better when you’re away from your house, chances are the problem is the air quality in your own home.

As you can see, poor air quality can result from a number of different issues. Fortunately, if you look for these warning signs of poor air quality, you’ll be able to solve problems before they get worse. Installing an air filter is one of the first steps you can take toward achieving and maintaining good air quality in your home.  Please feel free to contact us today if you would like to learn more or have any questions regarding signs of poor air quality in your home or place of business.
