HVAC Tips to Prepare for Spring

HVAC Tips

Spring is finally here which means we will soon have warmer weather. HVAC systems are essential in keeping your home cool in the spring and summer. With some preparation and routine maintenance, you can help your system keep you comfortable and perform at its most efficient. It is best not to wait until summer and risk a potential breakdown on the day you need it the most. Afterall summer is the busiest time of year for HVAC technicians. Here are some HVAC tips to prepare for spring and the warmer months ahead.

Replace Air Filters

Air filter replacement is one of the first things you will want to take care of to prepare your HVAC system for the warmer months. The air filter is responsible for keeping dust, debris, and other air pollutants from entering your HVAC equipment. The general rule of thumb is to replace them every 3 months, but some homes will want to replace them more often especially those with pets.  Check the air filter monthly and change it when it looks dirty. If you continue using a clogged air filter the excess debris will make its way into your HVAC system. This increases the wear and tear on your HVAC system and interior components increasing the likelihood of needing AC repair. Not only that, but clogged air filters will also restrict airflow which will lead to diminished efficiency and therefore higher energy bills. It is also important to keep in mind that dirty air filters will contribute to poor indoor air quality in your home. Make sure you have the correct size and type of air filter for your HVAC system. Neglecting to replace your air filters on time can lead to costly AC repair or even early AC replacement.

Check Your Thermostat

Check that your thermostat is in good working order. If you have not already done so, invest in a programmable thermostat or a smart thermostat to save energy. You will also want to reset your thermostat and program it for the warmer months.

Turn On Your AC

Turn on your air conditioning system to test if it works, before beginning to use it regularly during the warmer season. This will help you make sure it is running properly and help you identify if any AC repair is required before a heatwave.

Check for Duct Leaks

Over time your duct system can develop leaks. This leads to air escaping the ducts before it reaches the rooms in your home, making it much less efficient and leading to increased energy bills. Check your duct system for any visible signs of wear and tear or leaks that could cause your system to work harder than it needs to.  If you are unsure, contact an HVAC professional who can inspect and repair them before you start up your air conditioner. This will help you save on cooling costs and keep your home comfortable.

Check the Outdoor Unit

Check the condenser, the outdoor unit. During the winter months, foliage or other debris may have accumulated around the outdoor unit. Cleaning the outdoor unit keeps it working properly and efficiently and can help prevent costly AC repairs in the future. Keep a minimum clearance of at least 2 feet around the condenser to allow for adequate airflow. Make sure your outdoor unit is clean before you start using it this summer.

Schedule Professional AC Maintenance

The easiest and most important step you can take is to schedule professional AC maintenance before the temperatures rise. A tune up should be performed at the very least once a year and springtime is the best time to schedule it. During AC maintenance a technician can catch any potential problems before a complete breakdown leaving you without an operational AC on a hot day. Routine maintenance helps check for any signs of wear and tear and can help ensure all components are running properly. LA Construction, Heating and Air offers Maintenance Plans with automatic reminders making it less stressful for you. This is a great way to schedule routine maintenance without having to remember when its due and can help you save money in the long run. By staying on top of HVAC maintenance it is less likely to have expensive AC repairs or need AC replacement much sooner than you would have to.
