Is AC Wasting Energy?

ac wasting energy

Almost half of the energy used in your home is from heating and cooling. To help you save money it is important that your system run as efficiently as possible. We understand that sometimes when your system is running as it should you might not think about its performance. However, do not always assume your system is running at peak efficiency. With summer well on its way, it is important to be able to know the telltale signs of an ac wasting energy. If you notice any of the signs below it may be time to replace your current system with a new efficient system.

Increase In Energy Costs

Energy efficient systems are designed to save you money. Year to year unless there has been a significant rate increase your electric bills should remain about the same. If you notice a higher than normal energy bill with no just cause, your ac unit may not be working properly or as efficiently as it could. This can be a direct result due to an aging system as older components work harder and longer to cool your home. This will result in longer cooling cycles causing high electric bills.

Inconsistent Temperatures Throughout Home

Another sign of an inefficient system is experiencing inconsistent temperatures throughout your home. An efficient system would maintain the same temperature throughout your home. With an inefficient system you will notice hot and cold spots in different rooms. Keep in mind, aging and poorly insulated ductwork can also cause temperature discrepancies.

AC Unit Runs Constantly

It is normal for air conditioners to run multiple cycles per hour. However, if your AC is running more often than it should it means it is not performing as efficiently as it should. If your system is failing to keep up with the set temperature, the constant struggle of trying to keep up results in your AC wasting energy.

Frequent AC Repairs

Another sign that your AC is wasting energy is if you find yourself constantly scheduling ac repair. As one component fails it uses up excess energy to keep up with demand. If you are simply patching issues or your system starts requiring major repairs, it is a good time to consider ac replacement.

Your AC is Over 10 Years Old

Even if you have an older system that is running smoothly, it may not be as energy efficient as it once was. It is important to keep in mind that over time efficiency is lost as components start to get older and not work as well. This means your older AC is working harder to keep your home cool and comfortable. Furthermore, newer systems have higher SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) requirements, which means they are more energy efficient.

House Remains Humid

Do you ever feel clammy indoors even while the AC is on? That feeling is a symptom of high humidity indoors. An efficient AC will be able to control both temperature and indoor humidity. If the evaporator coil is not cold enough due to lack of maintenance or low refrigerant levels, then it will not be able to remove as must moisture from the air. This will usually lead to lowering the thermostat causing the AC to work harder and consume more energy.

Lack of Routine Maintenance

Like all other major home appliances, the HVAC system benefits from routine maintenance to keep it working as efficiently as possible with minimal repairs. Routine maintenance would include at minimum an annual inspection to change filters, check all AC components and check for any potential issues that may lead to your AC wasting energy. Furthermore, it is important for the AC to remain properly charged refrigerant levels and clean coils to keep the system performing at optimum efficiency.
